Cooperative bank employees to go on one-day strike

AHMEDABAD: Employees of cooperative banks across the country will go on a one-day strike on November 25, 2016, to protest against the restrictions imposed on co-operative banks, mainly district central cooperative banks (DCCBs). The strike has been called by the All India Co-op Bank Employee Federation (AICBEF).
"The decision was taken after a meeting of AICBEF affiliated state federations on November 16, 2016 at Vijayawada in Maharashtra. All employees will strike work for a day to mark our protests," said Kiritsinh Dabhi, general secretary, Gujarat State Co-op Bank Employees' Federation. "We demand DCCBs should be allowed to deal in demonetized notes," said Dabhi, who had also attended the meeting in Viajaywada.
"RBI has permitted urban and state co-op banks to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, but has barred DCCBs and industrial co-op banks. It is an attempt to disrespect cooperative banks, especially DCCBs," AICBEF alleged in a statement.
The RBI on Sunday barred all DCCBs from exchanging and accepting deposits of phased-out currency notes. However, later on, customers of DCCBs were permitted to withdraw Rs 24,000 per week till November 24. The central bank has also asked urban co-operative banks and state cooperative banks across the country to strictly comply with instructions issued with regard to exchange and deposits of demonetized currency notes.
