SBI merger: Will superbank be a super place to work?
It is reported that the merger would increase SBI network by 41 per cent to 23,000 branches, while its workforce would increase by 33 per cent to 285,500 employees.What is not being said, however, is how many of these branches will survive the ‘streamlining’ process the bank has already set the dice rolling for. While clear figures may be available only with SBI itself, it is very evident that at least in areas where the subsidiary banks have a strong footprint (like Kerala) many branches will face closures. The question then is, what of the employees at these branches? Presumably, of over 10000-odd branches which would face the axe, a large number of employees will need to be accommodated elsewhere.
