Kerala gets first private bank
Thrissur: ESAF Small Finance Bank, Kerala's first private sector bank, was launched here on Friday By chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.The bank,Promoted by ESAF Microfinance and Investments (P) Ltd, Has announced that in its first year it will open 85 branches.
As per RBI guidelines, the bank is required to open 25 percent of its branches in unbanked rural centers besides in cities like bengaluru,Kolkata,Mumbai,Delhi and Hyderabad in the First Year.
ESAF Microfinance which presently has a network of 285 branches in 93 districts spread over 11 states

Kerala CM asks coop. banks to adopt core banking
Thiruvananthapuram: Stung by the post-demonetisation RBI curbs on cooperatives in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked the primary cooperative credit institutions in the State to adopt a common software that would make them fully compliant with RBI norms.
Addressing a meeting of cooperators and cooperative institution representatives, Mr. Vijayan said the cooperatives could either go for the RBI's core banking software or have some other software that is chosen entirely on the basis of merit. This should be done in consultation with NABARD, he said.
The Chief Minister also asked the cooperative credit institutions to see if they could collectively come out with a card modelled on the RuPay card and revise the interest being paid for deposits. The government, he said, would give full guarantee for every paisa deposited with cooperative banks and credit institutions. Those heading such institutions should visit homes of depositors about the safety of their money, he added.
The Chief Minister's statement assume significance in the light of the stringent curbs imposed on District Cooperative Banks (DCBs) by the RBI following reports that their activities in the hours following the announcement of demonetisation called for a closer look. Roughly Rs. 2,200 crore in the demonetised currencies, receiving from primary credit bodies and individual depositors, is reported to be remaining stuck with the DCBs.

“The transfer of Adikesavan, who is a competent officer, is not an ordinary decision. Obviously it has to be for the involvement in the merger. I have noted objections to the way the merger is being conducted in the minutes,” Peter, who retired as additional chief secretary to the Kerala government, told The Indian Express. “However, the SBI management was stage managing all the decisions on their own and asked SBT officials to put their signature. They have not taken into account the sentiments of people, customers and the Kerala government,” said State Bank of Travancore Employees Union general secretary KS Krishna. A Signature Campaign is to be launched on August 9 -AIBEA,AIBOA
With the State Bank of India going ahead with measures for merger with the State Bank of Travancore, the employees of the latter, under the banner of State Sector Bank Employees Association (SSBEA), have decided to intensify their stir against the move.
A signature campaign, involving 50 lakh people, is to be launched on August 9, the Quit India Day, with the support of two other organisations in the banking sector — All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA).
The employees are unleashing a campaign against the merger move, beginning from the panchayat level. Dharnas and a relay hunger strike will be organised in New Delhi next month. Rallies to Raj Bhavans are to be held in October in all the five States where the State banks are slated for merger. A massive march is to be taken out to Parliament in November. The organisation may call for a strike anytime, according to SSBEA representatives.
The issue is to be brought to the attention of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, K.S. Krishna, general secretary, SSBEA, told The Hindu . The employees’ representatives will also meet the Chief Ministers of the respective States. The Kerala Assembly has already passed a resolution against the proposed merger of the SBT with SBI.
The ‘scheme of acquisition’ would be discussed at the respective director boards of the banks shortly, banking sources said. The authorities would want the acquisition to be completed by March next year.
But the employees are likely to approach court praying for a full stop to the government decision. In Kerala, the total number of branches of the merged entity (in the event of a merger) will be less than the total number of the SBI and SBT now.
“At present, the SBI has over 460 branches while the SBT has more than 850 branches in the State. The ‘overlapping’ branches will be cut down. About 30 per cent of the branches are to be shut down. This will be of much help to private banks which are in keen competition with the SBT in Kerala,” Mr. Krishna said.

Canara Bank moved to Four tier Organisation Structure
Canara Bank has moved from a three-tier to a four-tier organisation structure – comprising head office, 21 circles, 118 regional offices (ROs) and 5,847 branches across the country. The bank had pilot launched its four-tier structure on Apri1 15 this year in two circles – Bengaluru (Karnataka) and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – with 19 ROs. Now, the bank is opening the remaining 19 circles and 99 ROs effective Thursday. The bank had moved to a three-tier organisation structure in 2006. While inaugurating the 19 circles and 99 ROs, Rakesh Sharma, MD and CEO of the bank, said: “Being a front-ranking large commercial bank in the country, we must change our structure to be more agile, stay in tune with the times, drive business, and bring in sustained growth by establishing more ‘Connect with the Branches and Customers’ initiatives.”

SBI merger: Will superbank be a super place to work?
It is reported that the merger would increase SBI network by 41 per cent to 23,000 branches, while its workforce would increase by 33 per cent to 285,500 employees.What is not being said, however, is how many of these branches will survive the ‘streamlining’ process the bank has already set the dice rolling for. While clear figures may be available only with SBI itself, it is very evident that at least in areas where the subsidiary banks have a strong footprint (like Kerala) many branches will face closures. The question then is, what of the employees at these branches? Presumably, of over 10000-odd branches which would face the axe, a large number of employees will need to be accommodated elsewhere. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JANUARY 8:
State Banks’ Staff Union (SBI Kerala Circle) is planning to step up its agitation against what it describes as the indifferent attitude of the management to its grievances.
It proposes to widen the ongoing protest programmes centred around Thrissur to all administrative and regional offices on January 12 and to the local head office in Thiruvananthapuram on January 21.
The protests will seek to expose the ‘anti-labour’ stance of the management. The union singled out the management of the bank’s Thrissur module for precipitating a needless crisis by its various acts of omission and commission directed at the clerical staff.
The module has allegedly flouted the bank’s conventions and policies by arbitrarily transferring staff to distant centres on oral orders and portrayed them as punishment transfers.
Attempts to convince senior officials at the circle level of the urgency of the matter have not yielded results, the union said.
It has also expressed strong opposition to the career development scheme introduced by the bank which it says would only help topple the service conditions and put staff deployment in jeopardy.
